ASTM A787 Aluminized Steel Tube Precision Steel Tubes for Automotive
ASTM A787 aluminized steel tube is an electric-resistance-welded carbon steel mechanical tube manufactured from metallic-coated steel strip. For automotive applications, ASTM A787 Type 1, designated AWAC, is the relevant aluminized construction. The tube combines the dimensional control and formability of low-carbon ERW mechanical tubing with an aluminum-based protective coating on the inside and outside surfaces.
The aluminized strip used for Type 1 tubing is manufactured in accordance with ASTM A463/A463M. Aluminum-silicon coated material is particularly suitable for automotive components exposed simultaneously to exhaust heat, condensate, road moisture and atmospheric corrosion.
ASTM A787 is primarily a dimensional, chemical, manufacturing and coating specification. Mechanical-property limits are not assigned to individual A787 carbon-steel grades; where tensile, yield or elongation requirements are critical, they should be specified separately in the purchase order.

Main Characteristics
ASTM A787 Type 1 Aluminized Construction
Type 1 AWAC tubing is manufactured by ERW forming of precoated aluminum-coated carbon steel strip rather than by applying a coating only after the tube has been formed. This provides metallic coating on both the outside and inside surfaces of the tube.
For automotive exhaust-service tubing, aluminum-silicon coated sheet is commonly selected because the Al-Si layer provides oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures while reducing direct exposure of the carbon-steel substrate to exhaust condensate and road contaminants.
Controlled ERW Weld Geometry
ASTM A787 requires the outside weld flash to be removed. The internal weld condition can be ordered according to manufacturing requirements.
Available conditions include:
  • Flash-In: Internal flash shall not exceed the wall thickness or 2.38 mm, whichever is less.
  • Flash Controlled: Maximum remaining internal flash of 0.25 mm.
  • Precision Flash Controlled: Maximum remaining internal flash of 0.13 mm for applicable sizes.
This is important for automotive tube bending, expanding, end forming and insertion into muffler or resonator assemblies.
Defined Dimensional Range
ASTM A787/A787M covers tubing with:
  • Outside diameter or maximum outside dimension: 12.7-380.0 mm
  • Wall thickness: 0.70-4.60 mm
The standard also establishes size-dependent OD, wall-thickness, length, straightness and cut tolerances rather than applying one generic tolerance to all tube sizes.
Aluminum-Silicon Surface Protection
When ASTM A463/A463M Type 1 aluminum-silicon coated strip is specified for the starting material, the coating contains an aluminum-rich layer with silicon added to control the steel/coating intermetallic layer.
This coating system is widely selected for components exposed to repeated heating and cooling cycles, particularly automotive exhaust tubing.

1. Weld-Seam Corrosion Protection Can Be Controlled at the Ordering Stage
A frequent procurement concern with tubing made from precoated strip is the weld seam. ERW welding locally disturbs the original metallic coating at the weld and heat-affected zone.
For this reason, ASTM A787 allows recoating of the outside-diameter weld and heat-affected area to be specified. For automotive exhaust orders, the purchase specification can therefore define OD weld-seam recoating requirements, coating system, maximum allowable uncoated weld width, and surface inspection method.
2. Internal Weld Flash Can Be Matched to the Automotive Forming Process
Automotive tubes are frequently expanded, reduced, bent, swaged or assembled over another tube. Excessive internal flash can interfere with mandrels, insertion depth and end-forming tools.
ASTM A787 provides defined flash conditions rather than treating the ID weld bead as an uncontrolled feature. For demanding forming operations, flash can be controlled to a maximum of 0.25 mm or, for applicable sizes, 0.13 mm.
3. Coating and Tube Dimensions Are Specified as One Finished System
ASTM A787 specifies that the ordered wall thickness includes both the steel substrate and the metallic coating. This point is important when automotive engineers calculate tube mass, bending clearance, slip-fit dimensions, end expansion, assembly tolerances, and tooling dimensions.

Application
Automotive Exhaust Muffler Inlet Tube
One specific application is the inlet tube used in an automotive exhaust muffler assembly. The tube carries hot exhaust gas from the upstream exhaust section into the muffler body and is exposed to repeated thermal cycling, internal acidic condensate and external road moisture.
ASTM A787 Type 1 aluminized tubing is suitable for this component because the carbon-steel substrate provides the required tube-forming capability while the aluminum-based coating protects the tube surfaces against oxidation and corrosion.
For muffler inlet-tube production, the most important procurement parameters are normally: outside diameter, wall thickness, tube ovality, internal flash height, aluminized coating designation, weld-seam recoating, cut length, end-expansion dimensions, bending radius, and surface defects at the bend area.
