Product Description
Drive Shaft Tube ASTM A513 Precision Steel Tube for Automotive Use
ASTM A513 Precision Drive Shaft Steel Tube for automotive applications
Product Overview

ASTM A513 precision drive shaft steel tube is an electric-resistance-welded mechanical tube designed for automotive rotating components where dimensional accuracy, wall uniformity, straightness, weld integrity, and repeatable mechanical properties are critical. For precision drive shaft production, ASTM A513 Type 5 Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM) tubing is commonly selected because the welded mother tube is subsequently cold drawn over a mandrel, improving outside-diameter accuracy, inside-diameter consistency, concentricity, surface condition, and strength.

Typical material choices include SAE/AISI 1010, 1020, 1026, 1035, and 4130. Among these, 1020 and 1026 are practical choices for automotive propeller shafts requiring a balance of weldability, torsional strength, forming performance, and dimensional stability, while 4130 can be specified where higher strength is required.

Main Features
  • Controlled Dimensional Accuracy: ASTM A513 Type 5 tubing is produced by drawing an ERW mother tube over a mandrel. For commonly used DOM dimensions, wall-thickness tolerance can be controlled within approximately ±0.05 mm on selected light-wall sizes and approximately ±0.08 to ±0.15 mm on many larger OD/wall combinations. This degree of control is important for drive shafts because excessive wall variation creates uneven mass distribution and increases the amount of correction required during dynamic balancing.
  • Straightness Suitable for Rotating Components: For round ASTM A513 Type 5 tubing below approximately 203 mm OD, a commonly specified straightness limit is 0.76 mm maximum deviation per 1 m length. Controlled straightness helps reduce initial shaft runout before welding the tube to yokes, splined ends, or other driveline components.
  • High Strength-to-Weight Efficiency: Cold drawing increases the strength of the tube compared with normalized tubing of the same chemistry. For example, ASTM A513 Type 5 Grade 1026 in the mandrel-drawn condition can be specified with approximately: Minimum yield strength: 483 MPa, Minimum tensile strength: 552 MPa, Minimum elongation: 5%. This makes relatively thin-wall tube construction possible while maintaining the mechanical strength required by rotating driveline assemblies.
  • Improved Wall Uniformity and Concentricity: The DOM process controls both the outside and inside geometry of the tube more closely than ordinary as-welded mechanical tubing. Consistent wall distribution is particularly important for a drive shaft because tube eccentricity directly affects rotational mass distribution.
  • Controlled Internal Weld Area: The initial ERW seam is mechanically worked during the subsequent drawing operation. Compared with conventional as-welded tubing, the DOM process produces a more uniform internal geometry and reduces the dimensional influence of the original weld area.
Our Advantages
  • Better Control of Tube Eccentricity Before Dynamic Balancing: Our production route controls OD, wall thickness, ovality, straightness, and concentricity as related parameters rather than inspecting OD alone. This reduces excessive mass eccentricity in the raw tube and provides a more stable starting condition for downstream drive shaft balancing. For critical projects, additional dimensional requirements can be agreed in the purchase specification before production.
  • Stable Weld Quality for Yoke-to-Tube Assembly: Grades such as 1010, 1020, and 1026 provide controlled carbon and manganese ranges suitable for mechanical fabrication. Tubes can be supplied with clean, controlled end surfaces and fixed-length cutting to support automated circumferential welding operations. Material grade, heat condition, and welding procedure should always be matched during final driveline qualification.
  • Traceable Material and Dimensional Inspection: Each production lot can be controlled by heat number and manufacturing batch, with chemical composition, dimensional inspection, and specified mechanical test results recorded against the corresponding order. Optional NDT requirements can also be incorporated into the purchase specification when additional weld-integrity verification is required.

Application
Passenger Vehicle Propeller Drive Shaft

The tube is used as the main hollow rotating body of a passenger vehicle propeller shaft connecting the transmission or transfer case to the differential. The tube is cut to a controlled length and normally welded to drive shaft yokes or end fittings before straightening and dynamic balancing. Because the component operates continuously under torsional loading and rotational speed, its tube requires controlled wall thickness, concentricity, straightness, weld integrity, and mechanical strength.

ASTM A513 Type 5 Grade 1020 or 1026 DOM tubing is particularly suitable where a balance of strength, weldability, dimensional stability, and production consistency is required.
