Product Description
Automotive Chassis Tube 4130 Round Chromoly Chassis Tube
Automotive Chassis Tube 4130 Round Chromoly Chassis Tube

4130 round chromoly chassis tube is a chromium-molybdenum low-alloy mechanical tubing developed for welded automotive structures requiring high strength, good toughness, controlled dimensions, and lower structural weight. For automotive chassis construction, SAE/AISI 4130 is commonly supplied as seamless cold-finished or hot-finished mechanical tubing under ASTM A519/A519M, with normalized, annealed, stress-relieved, or quenched-and-tempered conditions selected according to fabrication and final performance requirements.

Compared with conventional low-carbon chassis tubing, 4130 provides a higher strength-to-weight ratio and allows engineers to use relatively thin wall sections where the structural design and welding procedure permit. It is particularly suitable for tubular space-frame chassis members that are subjected to combined bending, torsional, vibration, and fatigue loads.

Main Characteristics
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

SAE 4130 contains approximately 0.80-1.10% chromium and 0.15-0.25% molybdenum. These alloying elements improve hardenability, strength, and fatigue resistance compared with ordinary low-carbon mechanical tubing.

Cold-drawn and normalized 4130 material commonly reaches approximately 590-760 MPa tensile strength and 480-590 MPa yield strength, depending on section size and processing condition. Heat treatment can increase these values significantly.

Controlled Carbon Content for Welded Structures

The ASTM/SAE 4130 carbon range is approximately 0.28-0.33%. This carbon level provides substantially higher hardenability than mild steel while remaining more suitable for fabrication and welding than higher-carbon Cr-Mo grades such as 4140.

Correct filler metal, heat input, joint design, restraint control, and preheat requirements must be selected according to tube wall thickness, welding process, chassis design, and applicable fabrication specification.

Suitable for Thin-Wall Tubular Structures

4130 tubing is frequently selected when chassis designers need to reduce tube mass without reducing structural capacity. Cold-finished tubing also provides consistent outside diameter, wall thickness, roundness, and surface condition for CNC bending, tube notching, jig assembly, and precision welding.

Good Fatigue and Torsional Performance

The Cr-Mo alloy system provides a useful combination of strength and toughness for tubular members exposed to repeated road vibration, torsional chassis loading, cornering forces, acceleration, and braking loads.

Final fatigue performance, however, depends strongly on weld quality, tube geometry, heat-affected-zone condition, stress concentrations, joint design, and surface condition.

Our Advantages
Controlled Dimensional Consistency for Chassis Fabrication

A common concern for professional chassis manufacturers is variation in outside diameter and wall thickness, because dimensional instability directly affects CNC bending, tube notching, jig positioning, and weld-gap control.

We can supply cold-finished 4130 tubing according to ASTM A519 dimensional requirements with dimensional inspection of OD, wall thickness, ovality, length, and straightness. Tighter project-specific tolerances can be agreed before production when chassis fixtures or automated fabrication lines require closer control.

Heat-Treatment Condition Defined Before Production

Another purchasing risk is ordering only "4130 tube" without specifying the metallurgical condition. ASTM A519 controls mechanical tubing manufacture and chemistry, but one universal tensile and yield value cannot be applied to every 4130 tube regardless of heat treatment.

For chassis projects, the required condition can therefore be defined in the purchase specification as annealed, normalized, stress relieved, or quenched and tempered. Mechanical-property acceptance values can also be written directly into the order when required.

Full Heat Traceability for Safety-Critical Structures

Chassis and motorsport manufacturers commonly require material identity to remain traceable from steelmaking through tube production and fabrication.

Each production lot can be linked to heat-number records, chemical analysis, dimensional inspection, heat-treatment records, and mechanical test results where specified. EN 10204 3.1 inspection certification can also be supplied when required by the purchasing specification.

Execution Standards
Standard System Applicable Standard / Grade Description
ASTM ASTM A519/A519M Grade 4130 Seamless carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing
SAE / AISI SAE/AISI 4130 / UNS G41300 Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel designation
EN EN 10083-3 25CrMo4 / 1.7218 Comparable European Cr-Mo alloy steel
JIS JIS G4053 SCM430 Comparable Japanese Cr-Mo alloy structural steel
GB GB/T 3077 30CrMo Comparable Chinese Cr-Mo alloy structural steel
GOST GOST 4543 30KhMA Comparable Russian alloy structural steel

Equivalent grades are approximate material counterparts rather than automatic one-for-one substitutes. Chemical composition, heat treatment, mechanical properties, dimensional standard, and certification requirements must be confirmed before substitution.

Application
Tubular Space-Frame Chassis Main Side Rail

4130 round chromoly tubing can be used as a main longitudinal side rail in a welded tubular automotive space-frame chassis.

The tube carries longitudinal, bending, and torsional loads between the front and rear chassis sections while providing attachment points for cross-members and triangulated structural members. Selection of tube diameter, wall thickness, heat treatment, weld detail, and node geometry should be based on structural calculations and the applicable vehicle or motorsport design regulation.
