Product Description
Chromoly Alloy Steel Tube Roll Cage Tubing For Automotive Roll Bar
Chromoly alloy steel tubing for automotive roll cages
Product Overview

Chromoly alloy steel tubing is a high-strength chromium-molybdenum mechanical tube used for automotive roll cages, roll bars, chassis reinforcement, and motorsport safety structures. SAE/AISI 4130 is the most commonly specified chromoly grade for roll-cage fabrication, providing an optimal combination of strength, toughness, bendability, and weldability.

For professional automotive applications, specifications should define the exact grade, manufacturing route, heat-treatment condition, dimensions, tolerances, and material traceability. ASTM A519 seamless 4130 tubing in normalized condition is commonly selected for fabricated roll-cage structures.

Main Characteristics
High Strength-to-Weight Performance

Normalized ASTM A519 4130 tubing typically provides minimum tensile strength around 621 MPa and minimum yield strength around 414 MPa, with elongation around 20%. This combination provides significantly higher structural strength than conventional low-carbon mechanical tubing.

Chromium-Molybdenum Alloying

Typical ASTM A519 4130 chemistry contains approximately:

  • 0.28-0.33% carbon
  • 0.80-1.10% chromium
  • 0.15-0.25% molybdenum

Chromium contributes to strength and hardenability, while molybdenum improves hardenability and maintains mechanical performance after controlled heat treatment.

Suitable for Tube Bending

Normalized 4130 tubing provides optimal balance between strength and ductility for mandrel bending, tube notching, and roll-cage fabrication. Bend radius, tooling, wall thickness, and tube condition must be controlled to prevent ovality, wrinkling, or cracking.

Controlled Weldability

4130 can be successfully welded with appropriate filler material, joint preparation, heat input, and fabrication procedures. The normalized condition is commonly selected for welded roll-cage fabrication to avoid undesirable hardness in the heat-affected zone.

Consistent Mechanical-Tube Geometry

Cold-finished seamless mechanical tubing provides controlled OD, wall thickness, roundness, and surface condition for CNC tube bending, laser cutting, tube notching, welding fixtures, and repeatable chassis fabrication.

Our Advantages
1. Controlled Material Identity

We supply tubing against clearly defined grades like ASTM A519 4130, with heat-number identification and material certification showing actual chemical composition. This allows verification of steel grade, composition, manufacturing route, heat-treatment condition, and dimensions.

2. Controlled Wall Thickness

Motorsport organizations specify roll-cage tube dimensions according to vehicle weight and limit permitted negative wall variation. We can provide tighter wall-thickness control, ultrasonic thickness verification, or agreed minimum-wall requirements when required.

3. Matched Delivery Condition

The mechanical properties of 4130 depend on heat-treatment condition. For welded roll cages, normalized 4130 is generally more practical than high-hardness heat-treated material. Purchase orders can specify normalized, annealed, stress relieved, or quenched and tempered conditions.

Application
Automotive Competition Roll Cage Main Hoop

4130 chromoly round tubing is used to manufacture the main hoop of automotive competition roll cages. The tube is mandrel bent to vehicle-specific geometry and welded to create rigid occupant-protection structures. Final dimensions, mounting arrangement, welding method, and cage geometry must comply with competition regulations.

Typical professional specification: ASTM A519 4130 normalized seamless mechanical tubing, round, 38.1 mm OD × 2.4 mm wall thickness, with heat-number traceability and material test certification.
