ACMS ASTM A787 Type 1 tube is an electric-resistance-welded low-carbon steel mechanical tube made from aluminized steel strip. In practical terms, it combines a formable mild-steel substrate with an aluminum-silicon protective coating, giving the tube a useful balance of heat resistance, corrosion protection, weldability, and manufacturing economy for exhaust service. ASTM A787 covers metallic-coated ERW carbon steel mechanical tubing, and Type 1 is the aluminized version commonly selected where heat and corrosion resistance are important.
Product type: Aluminized carbon mild steel welded tube / exhaust tube
Standard basis: ASTM A787/A787M, Type 1
Manufacturing process: ERW forming and welding from metallic-coated low-carbon steel strip
Base material: Low-carbon mild steel
Coating type: Aluminum-silicon hot-dip coated surface
Shape: Round tube is most common for exhaust routing; other shapes can be produced within mechanical-tubing practice
ASTM covered size range: Outside diameter or maximum outside dimension from 1/2 in. to 15 in. (12.7 mm to 380.0 mm), with wall thickness from 0.028 in. to 0.180 in. (0.70 mm to 4.60 mm)
Supply form: Mill lengths or cut lengths, plain ends, deburred ends, custom fabrication available
Service focus: Exhaust assemblies, hot-gas transfer lines, and coated mechanical tubing rather than pressure line-pipe duty
Good resistance to heat cycling in exhaust applications
Better corrosion protection than plain uncoated mild steel
Good formability for bending, expanding, reducing, and routing
Reliable weldability for downstream fabrication
Cost-efficient material choice for standard exhaust systems
Consistent dimensional control from ERW tube production
These advantages are why aluminized steel remains a widely used exhaust material: the steel core contributes strength and formability, while the Al-Si coating provides heat shielding and corrosion protection. It is also widely selected as a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel for many mainstream exhaust programs.
1. Concern: Will the tube fail early from condensate, road salt, and external rusting?
Our solution is an aluminized low-carbon steel structure with a protective aluminum-silicon coating. This coating is used specifically where both heat resistance and corrosion resistance are required, making it well suited to exhaust environments.
2. Concern: Will it tolerate thermal cycling and continuous hot-gas exposure?
ASTM A787 Type 1 is the aluminized version of metallic-coated ERW tubing, and aluminized steel is explicitly used for heat-resisting applications. That gives buyers a proven material route for mufflers, resonators, tail pipes, and connector tubes.
3. Concern: Do I need stainless steel for every exhaust project?
Not always. For many OEM replacement, standard-duty, and cost-sensitive exhaust systems, aluminized carbon steel offers an efficient balance of durability, fabrication ease, and procurement cost. Stainless steel is typically preferred only when the corrosion target is substantially more severe or the service-life target is unusually high.
Because ASTM A787 governs the finished metallic-coated ERW tube rather than a single mandatory base-steel chemistry, buyers usually review representative low-carbon substrate grades when comparing forming and welding behavior. The table below lists standard chemistry limits for five relevant comparison grades.
