ASTM A500 Cold-Formed Seamless Square Steel Tubing
ASTM A500 cold-formed seamless square steel tubing is designed for load-bearing structural assemblies requiring uniform section geometry, predictable yield strength, and reliable welded or bolted connections. For railway infrastructure, it is primarily used in stationary structures such as railway station canopy support columns, where dimensional consistency, straightness, corner quality, and material traceability directly affect fabrication accuracy and structural performance.
ASTM A500/A500M covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing in round, square, rectangular, and special shapes. The specification applies to structural members used in welded, riveted, or bolted construction. ASTM A500 Grade C is generally the preferred grade for square structural tubing because it provides a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 425 MPa.
A500 tubing should not automatically be selected for dynamically loaded railway components. Where fatigue loading, low-temperature notch toughness, or mandatory Charpy impact performance is involved, the project engineer should evaluate ASTM A1085, ASTM A1110/A1110M, or another impact-tested structural specification.

Main Characteristics
High Section Efficiency: A square hollow section distributes material around the neutral axes more efficiently than many open sections. This provides strong resistance to bending and torsional deformation while maintaining a relatively low structural weight.
Defined Minimum Strength: For square and rectangular tubing, ASTM A500 Grade C specifies minimum yield strength of 345 MPa, minimum tensile strength of 425 MPa, and minimum elongation in 50 mm of 21%.
Controlled Straightness: The ASTM straightness limit is approximately 0.025 in. per foot of total length, equivalent to about 2.1 mm/m. Straightness control is important when several tubes must be aligned in long railway canopy columns or welded frame assemblies.
Cold-Formed Corner Strengthening: Cold forming introduces work hardening around the corners. The corner regions can therefore exhibit higher local yield strength than the flat faces.
Seamless Section Integrity: The seamless route eliminates a longitudinal ERW seam. This provides consistent section continuity around the full perimeter.
