Product Overview

SAE 1020 10 mm seamless carbon steel tubing is a small-diameter cold-drawn mechanical tube designed for shock absorber components requiring controlled dimensions, uniform wall thickness and reliable fatigue performance. The tube is produced without a welded seam and can be supplied cold-worked, stress-relieved, annealed or normalized according to the required forming process and mechanical properties.

For this product, SAE 1020 defines the chemical grade, while ASTM A519 is the appropriate manufacturing and delivery specification for seamless mechanical tubing. The 10 mm dimension is treated as the nominal outside diameter; the required wall thickness or inside diameter must be stated on the component drawing.

Dimensional note: A purchase order stating only "10 mm tubing" is incomplete. It should specify whether 10 mm refers to OD or ID and should also include the wall thickness, heat-treatment condition, cut length and critical tolerance.
Main Features
Seamless Construction

The tube is manufactured from a pierced hollow and subsequently cold drawn. There is no longitudinal weld zone, eliminating weld-related variation in hardness, wall structure and forming response.

Controlled Small-Diameter Geometry

For a 10 mm cold-worked tube, ASTM A519 provides a commercial OD tolerance of +0.10/−0 mm. Where the shock absorber design requires a centered bilateral tolerance, ±0.05 mm can be specified as a separate precision requirement.

Predictable Forming Performance

SAE 1020 contains 0.18-0.23% carbon and 0.30-0.60% manganese. This controlled low-carbon composition supports cutting, end forming, brazing and welding without the reduced ductility associated with higher-carbon grades.

Defined Straightness

For applicable seamless round tubing with an OD not exceeding 127 mm and a wall thickness greater than 3% of the OD, ASTM A519 limits curvature to 0.83 mm/m. Tighter straightness should be included in the component drawing when required by automated assembly equipment.

Adjustable Mechanical Condition

Cold working increases strength and dimensional stability, while stress relieving reduces residual drawing stress. Annealed or normalized material can be selected when extensive forming or higher ductility is required.

Our Manufacturing Advantages
  • Drawing-Based Dimensional Control: A 10 mm OD alone does not define a functional shock absorber tube. Production control can therefore be based on two critical dimensions selected by the customer: OD and wall thickness; OD and ID; or ID and wall thickness. OD, ID, wall thickness, ovality and eccentricity can be recorded in the inspection report. Reduced wall eccentricity may be agreed for parts requiring consistent forming or loading around the circumference.
  • Controlled Surface and Defect Inspection: Shock absorber components can be affected by longitudinal scratches, laps, pits and handling damage. The production route includes controlled drawing lubrication, straightening and protected packing. Eddy-current or ultrasonic testing can be specified to detect discontinuities, while special inside-surface requirements should be stated separately on the purchase order.
  • Heat-Treatment and Property Traceability: ASTM A519 does not automatically guarantee one universal tensile value for every delivery condition. Mechanical properties depend on whether the tube is cold-worked, stress-relieved, annealed or normalized. The required condition and tensile limits can therefore be fixed before production, with heat analysis, heat-treatment condition and test results reported on the inspection certificate.

Motorcycle Shock Absorber Damper Cartridge Sleeve

The 10 mm SAE 1020 seamless tube can be used as a small-diameter tubular sleeve within a motorcycle shock absorber damper assembly. Cold-drawn and stress-relieved material provides dimensional consistency for cutting, end forming and subsequent assembly.

Final suitability must be confirmed against the component drawing, load spectrum, operating pressure, surface treatment and fatigue-validation requirements.
