Product Description
ASTM A519 Oval Shaped WT 0.8MM Seamless Steel Tube
ASTM A519 Oval-Shaped Seamless Steel Tube
Product Overview

ASTM A519 oval-shaped seamless steel tube with a nominal wall thickness of 0.8 mm is a lightweight mechanical tube produced for components requiring a continuous weld-free section, controlled oval geometry and reliable forming performance.

The tube is normally manufactured by cold drawing a seamless hollow through shaped dies, followed by dimensional calibration and an appropriate heat-treatment cycle. Grades such as 1010, 1020 and 1026 are suitable for thin-wall profiles requiring bending, flattening or welding, while 4130 and 4140 can be selected when higher strength, fatigue resistance or subsequent heat treatment is required.

For a 0.8 mm wall, the oval major axis, minor axis, corner transition radii, wall-thickness tolerance and profile twist should be stated on the approved drawing. ASTM A519 compliance alone does not define every dimensional characteristic of a custom oval profile.

Main Characteristics
Weld-Free Oval Cross-Section

The seamless manufacturing route eliminates a longitudinal weld zone. This provides uniform material continuity around the oval perimeter and avoids local changes in hardness or formability associated with a welded seam.

Controlled 0.8 mm Thin Wall

A nominal 0.8 mm wall reduces component weight while retaining the closed-section stiffness of an oval profile. For critical parts, wall thickness should be checked at several positions around the perimeter because shaped drawing can redistribute material between the major-axis and minor-axis regions.

Directional Section Stiffness

An oval section provides different bending stiffness along its major and minor axes. Engineers can orient the major axis toward the principal load direction while maintaining a narrower installation width than an equivalent round tube.

Cold-Forming Capability

Low-carbon grades 1010, 1020 and 1026 can be supplied annealed or stress-relieved to improve bending, end forming, flattening and punching performance. The required heat-treatment condition should be selected according to the final forming radius and deformation level.

Accurate External Geometry

Cold drawing and final sizing provide better axis control, straightness and surface finish than an uncalibrated hot-finished special-shaped tube. Profile gauges or coordinate-measuring equipment can be used to verify major axis, minor axis, radii and twist.

Our Technical Advantages
1. Control of Wall Redistribution During Oval Forming

Procurement concern: Can a tube meet a 0.8 mm nominal wall while becoming excessively thin at the ends of the minor axis?

The production route can include multiple drawing and intermediate annealing stages rather than forcing the round hollow directly into its final oval geometry. Wall thickness is measured at several clock positions, especially around the tight-radius areas. Minimum local wall, rather than average wall alone, can be recorded in the inspection plan.

2. Profile-Specific Inspection Instead of Round-Tube Inspection Only

Procurement concern: How are major axis, minor axis, twist and profile distortion verified?

Dedicated go/no-go profile gauges, digital contour measurement or coordinate measurement can be used in addition to standard callipers and micrometers. Inspection reports can separately identify major-axis deviation, minor-axis deviation, local wall thickness, straightness and twist.

3. Heat Treatment Matched to Downstream Forming

Procurement concern: Will a thin-wall oval tube split, spring back excessively or distort during bending?

Low-carbon tubing can be supplied fully annealed or stress-relieved when severe bending is required. Alloy grades can be delivered in an annealed condition for fabrication and subsequently quenched and tempered after forming. Trial bends can be produced using the customer's specified bend radius before serial production.

Execution Standards
Standard Relevance
ASTM A519 Seamless carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing; primary manufacturing standard
ASTM A370 Mechanical testing methods for steel products
ASTM E415 Optical-emission analysis of carbon and low-alloy steel
ASTM E213 Ultrasonic examination of metal pipe and tubing when specified
ASTM E309 Eddy-current examination of steel tubular products when specified
EN 10305-1 European cold-drawn seamless precision steel tubing
EN 10297-1 European seamless circular steel tubes for mechanical and general engineering purposes
JIS G3445 Japanese carbon steel tubes for machine structural purposes
GB/T 3639 Chinese cold-drawn or cold-rolled precision seamless steel tubing
GOST 8734 Russian cold-formed seamless steel tubing

Equivalent standards are not automatically interchangeable. Chemical composition, mechanical properties, testing frequency and dimensional tolerances must be reviewed before substitution.

Specific Application
Automotive Seat Backrest Frame Cross-Member

The 0.8 mm oval seamless tube can be used as a cross-member in an automotive seat backrest frame. Its oval geometry provides relatively high bending stiffness in the principal loading direction while maintaining a slim seat structure.

For this component, low-carbon grade 1020 or 1026 in an annealed or stress-relieved condition is generally more suitable than a high-hardness alloy grade because the tube may require bending, end forming, bracket attachment and fatigue-resistant joining.
