Precision stainless steel capillary tubing
ASTM A269 precision stainless steel capillary tubing is designed for applications requiring a controlled small bore, corrosion resistance, dimensional consistency, and reliable performance at low or elevated temperatures. TP304, TP304L, TP316, and TP316L tubing can be supplied in accordance with ASTM A269/A269M for general corrosion-resistant service.
For Grade 310 or 310S, the governing specification must be selected carefully. TP310S is normally supplied under ASTM A213/A213M when seamless construction is required or ASTM A249/A249M when welded construction is required. ISO 1127 may additionally be specified for dimensional series, tolerances, and conventional mass requirements.
The tubing can be produced by seamless cold drawing, cold rolling, longitudinal welding, or welding followed by redrawing. Precision-cut short sections, straight lengths, polished surfaces, bright-annealed surfaces, and project-specific bore tolerances are available according to the final purchase drawing.

The listed OD and wall ranges are production ranges and cannot be combined arbitrarily. The minimum achievable inside diameter depends on the selected OD, wall thickness, grade, manufacturing route, and required tolerance.
Main Features
Controlled Capillary Bore
The tube can be ordered by OD and wall thickness or by OD and controlled ID. For flow restriction, sensor response, dosing, or pressure transmission applications, direct ID inspection can be specified instead of relying only on a calculated nominal bore.
ASTM A269 permits relatively broad wall tolerances, particularly for tubes up to 13 mm OD. Applications sensitive to internal volume or flow rate should therefore state the required ID tolerance, wall eccentricity, and measurement method on the purchase drawing.
Grade-Specific Corrosion Performance
TP304 and TP304L contain 18.0-20.0% chromium and provide reliable oxidation and corrosion resistance for general industrial environments.
TP316 and TP316L contain 2.00-3.00% molybdenum. This addition improves resistance to localized corrosion and pitting compared with molybdenum-free TP304 grades, particularly where chlorides or chemically contaminated condensate may be present.
TP304L and TP316L have lower maximum carbon contents than TP304 and TP316. They are commonly selected when the tubing will be welded or exposed to conditions where resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding is important.
High-Temperature TP310S Option
TP310S contains 24.0-26.0% chromium and 19.0-22.0% nickel. Its higher chromium and nickel contents provide improved oxidation resistance and a stable austenitic structure for elevated-temperature service.
TP310S should not be described as ASTM A269 tubing without an agreed supplementary specification. Seamless TP310S tubing should normally be ordered to ASTM A213/A213M, while welded TP310S tubing should normally be ordered to ASTM A249/A249M.
Verified Heat Treatment and Hardness
The tubing is supplied in the solution-annealed condition. Proper solution annealing restores corrosion resistance after cold working and controls final hardness and formability.
For TP304, TP304L, TP316, and TP316L under ASTM A269, the maximum hardness is 192 HBW, 200 HV, or 90 HRB. Comparable limits apply to TP310S under the relevant ASTM heat-exchanger tube specification.
Our Advantages
Correct Grade and Standard Matching
A common purchasing problem is listing TP310S together with ASTM A269 without verifying whether the grade is included in that standard. Before production, the grade, manufacturing route, service condition, and inspection requirements are reviewed together.
TP304, TP304L, TP316, and TP316L are assigned to ASTM A269 for general-service tubing. TP310S is assigned to ASTM A213 for seamless construction or ASTM A249 for welded construction. This prevents certificates from showing a grade-standard combination that does not match the governing ASTM specification.
Declared Tolerances Instead of a General "Precision" Claim
ASTM A269 dimensional tolerances may not be sufficiently narrow for capillary flow control, miniature fittings, sensor housings, or automatic assembly.
The order specification can separately define OD tolerance, wall tolerance, minimum ID, ID tolerance, ovality, wall eccentricity, straightness, cut-length tolerance, and burr height. The confirmed manufacturing tolerance is recorded on the quotation and purchase document rather than being replaced by an undefined "high precision" description.
Inspection Adapted to Miniature Tube Sizes
ASTM A269 states that its mechanical-property requirements do not apply to tubing smaller than 3.2 mm inside diameter or 0.38 mm wall thickness. Hardness testing is also impractical on certain miniature dimensions.
For such sizes, the purchase specification can define alternative inspection methods, including tensile testing under an agreed standard, microhardness testing, dimensional sampling frequency, air leakage testing, hydrostatic testing, eddy-current testing, surface cleanliness inspection, and direct bore measurement. The applicable method is confirmed before production.

Application
High-Temperature Thermocouple Probe Sheath
Precision stainless steel capillary tubing can be used as the protective outer sheath of an industrial thermocouple temperature probe.
TP304 or TP304L is suitable for general industrial temperature probes operating in relatively clean environments. TP316 or TP316L is preferred when the probe is exposed to moisture, process chemicals, or chloride-containing condensate. TP310S can be selected for the heated section of a probe where increased oxidation resistance is required.
For this product, the critical purchasing parameters are the tube OD, minimum ID, wall eccentricity, straightness, surface condition, closed-end forming requirement, sensor insertion clearance, and final cut length.
