Product Overview

Precision Grade 4130 chromoly steel pipe is a seamless chromium-molybdenum alloy steel mechanical tube designed for components requiring a controlled combination of strength, toughness, dimensional accuracy, heat-treatability, and weldability. For professional procurement, ASTM A519/A519M is the most directly applicable specification for seamless 4130 mechanical tubing; it covers both hot-finished and cold-finished seamless mechanical tubes and lists 4130 among its alloy steel grades. ASTM A519/A519M currently covers round tubing up to 325 mm outside diameter.

Although 4130 is sometimes commercially described as "low carbon chromoly," it is more accurately classified as a low-alloy Cr-Mo steel. ASTM A519 specifies approximately 0.28-0.33% carbon, 0.80-1.10% chromium, and 0.15-0.25% molybdenum for Grade 4130. The chromium-molybdenum combination provides substantially greater hardenability and strength potential than ordinary carbon mechanical tubing while retaining practical weldability when an appropriate welding procedure is used.

ASTM A519/A519M defines seamless mechanical tubing as tubing produced without a welded seam and permits subsequent cold finishing when tighter dimensions or modified properties are required.

Main Characteristics
  • Controlled Cr-Mo chemistry: ASTM A519 Grade 4130 contains 0.80-1.10% Cr and 0.15-0.25% Mo. These alloying additions increase hardenability and permit significant adjustment of strength through normalizing or quench-and-temper heat treatment.
  • Balanced carbon level for fabrication: The specified 0.28-0.33% carbon range is substantially lower than higher-carbon 4140 and 4150 grades. This provides 4130 with a useful balance between strength response and weldability, particularly for fabricated tubular structures.
  • Heat-treatment-responsive mechanical properties: Mechanical performance changes significantly with section size and thermal condition. As a reference, normalized AISI 4130 in a 25 mm round section has reported values of approximately 670 MPa tensile strength, 435 MPa yield strength, 25.5% elongation and 197 HB hardness. These are condition-specific reference values rather than universal ASTM A519 acceptance minima.
  • Suitable for precision cold finishing: Cold drawing can improve OD/ID control, surface quality, concentricity and machining allowance compared with ordinary hot-finished tubing, making 4130 suitable for mechanically machined tubular components.
  • High strength-to-section capability: Properly heat-treated 4130 tubing allows designers to obtain higher strength from relatively thin tube sections compared with conventional mild-steel tubing, subject to engineering design requirements and applicable safety standards.
Our Advantages
Dimensional Consistency for Secondary Machining

A frequent purchasing concern with mechanical tubing is whether OD, ID, wall thickness and concentricity will leave sufficient machining allowance without excessive material removal. Cold-finished 4130 tubing can be supplied with controlled dimensional tolerances, specified cut lengths and agreed machining allowance. Critical dimensions should be stated on the purchase order rather than relying only on a generic nominal pipe size.

Heat-Treatment and Material Traceability

The strength of 4130 changes considerably with annealing, normalizing, stress relieving or quenching and tempering. For this reason, material condition should be confirmed together with the grade. Procurement documentation can include heat number identification, chemical analysis, mechanical test results and heat-treatment condition so that the tube supplied can be matched to the intended component requirements. ASTM A519 requires heat analysis for the specified chemical elements.

Control of Surface and Internal Defects

Precision machining customers are often concerned about seams, laps, scale, decarburization, surface defects and internal discontinuities becoming visible after machining. Seamless production eliminates the longitudinal welded seam found in ERW tubing, while optional surface conditioning and nondestructive testing can be specified for more demanding components. Acceptance level and inspection method should be agreed before production rather than assumed from the basic ASTM A519 specification.

Execution Standards
Standard System Relevant Standard / Grade Description
ASTM / SAE ASTM A519/A519M, SAE/AISI 4130 Primary reference for seamless 4130 carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing
EN EN 10297-1, 25CrMo4 / 1.7218 European seamless mechanical/engineering tube family; chemically similar but not identical
JIS JIS G3441, SCM430TK family Alloy steel tubes for machine structural purposes; grade comparison must be checked by chemistry
GB GB/T 8162 with 30CrMo material requirements Chinese seamless structural/mechanical tube route using a comparable Cr-Mo steel family
GOST 30KhMA / 30ХМА alloy steel family Russian Cr-Mo structural steel broadly comparable to 4130; dimensional and delivery standards must be specified separately
Application
Motorsport Roll Cage Main Hoop

A specific application for precision 4130 chromoly tubing is the main hoop of a competition-vehicle roll cage.

For this component, buyers typically require controlled outside diameter, repeatable wall thickness, reliable bendability and predictable welded-joint performance. Normalized 4130 seamless tubing is commonly selected where a high strength-to-weight ratio is required. Tube diameter, wall thickness, bend radius, welding procedure and post-weld requirements must always comply with the governing motorsport or vehicle safety regulation rather than being selected solely from generic material-property data.
