Product Description

BS 3059 Gr 360 Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes , Hot Finished Seamless Tube

BS 3059 Gr 360 Carbon Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes, Hot Finished Seamless Tube

BS 3059 Gr 360 carbon steel heat exchanger tube is a hot-finished seamless tube intended for boiler, superheater and heat-transfer service requiring controlled chemistry, pressure integrity and elevated-temperature performance. Grade 360 is a low-carbon steel grade historically specified under BS 3059 Part 2, with a tensile strength range of 360–500 MPa, minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and minimum elongation of 24%.

For heat exchanger manufacturing, the seamless construction eliminates longitudinal weld seams and provides uniform pressure resistance around the tube circumference. Hot finishing also makes the product suitable for relatively large production sizes and for subsequent operations such as cutting, bending, expanding and tube-to-tubesheet assembly.

BS 3059 is a legacy British specification. BS 3059-2:1990 was withdrawn in 2002; for new projects, purchasers commonly review current pressure-tube standards such as BS EN 10216-2:2024 together with the original equipment design specification before approving substitution.

Main Characteristics

Controlled low-carbon chemistry: Grade 360 limits carbon to 0.17% maximum, with manganese controlled at 0.40–0.80% and silicon at 0.10–0.35%. The relatively moderate carbon level supports tube forming, bending and fabrication while retaining the specified tensile properties.

Defined mechanical strength: The specified tensile strength is 360–500 MPa, minimum yield strength is 235 MPa and minimum elongation is 24%. These values are important when calculating tube expansion, bending deformation and pressure-containing capability.

Restricted phosphorus and sulfur: Both phosphorus and sulfur are limited to 0.035% maximum. Controlling these residual elements is important for maintaining steel cleanliness and reducing the risk of reduced ductility during tube forming.

Seamless pressure boundary: Hot-finished seamless manufacture provides a continuous tube wall without a longitudinal welded joint, making the tube suitable for pressure-containing heat-transfer equipment where circumferential material consistency is required.

Dimensional control for tube installation: BS 3059 dimensional control allows OD, wall thickness, straightness and cut length to be specified for compatibility with tubesheet holes, support plates and tube-bending operations.

Our Advantages

1. How is material traceability controlled for replacement heat exchanger tubes?

For boiler and heat exchanger maintenance, one of the main purchasing risks is mixing tubes from different heats or supplying material whose actual chemistry cannot be traced to the ordered grade.

Each production batch can be controlled by heat number and linked to the corresponding chemical analysis and mechanical test results. The inspection documentation can identify standard, grade, heat number, dimensions, manufacturing route and test results so that the tube can be traced from raw material to finished bundle.

2. How are OD and wall thickness controlled for tubesheet expansion?

Heat exchanger manufacturers are particularly concerned with excessive OD variation, wall eccentricity and local wall thinning because these conditions directly affect mechanical expansion, hydraulic expansion and tubesheet sealing.

OD and wall thickness can therefore be checked at multiple positions along the tube rather than only at the tube ends. For orders requiring close tubesheet fit, the required OD tolerance class, wall tolerance and measurement method should be stated on the purchase order before production.

3. How is tube quality verified before shipment?

Visual appearance alone is not sufficient for pressure-service tubing. Professional buyers normally require confirmation of chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions and pressure integrity.

Inspection can include chemical analysis, tensile testing, dimensional measurement, straightness inspection, visual surface inspection and hydrostatic or applicable non-destructive leak testing. Additional ultrasonic or eddy-current examination can be agreed where required by the project specification.

Execution Standards

The following standards cover similar boiler, pressure or heat-exchanger tube applications. They should be treated as comparable specification families rather than automatic grade-for-grade equivalents.

Standard System Typical Standard Description
BS BS 3059-2 Carbon, alloy and stainless steel boiler and superheater tubes with specified elevated-temperature properties
ASTM ASTM A210/A210M Seamless medium-carbon steel boiler and superheater tubes
EN EN 10216-2 Seamless non-alloy and alloy steel tubes for pressure purposes with specified elevated-temperature properties
JIS JIS G 3461 Carbon steel tubes for boilers and heat exchangers
GB GB/T 5310 Seamless steel tubes and pipes for high-pressure boilers
GOST GOST 8731 / GOST 8732 Technical requirements and dimensional range for hot-deformed seamless steel pipes

Material substitution between these standards should be confirmed from chemical composition, room-temperature mechanical properties, elevated-temperature design data, dimensions, inspection requirements and the pressure-equipment design code.

Application

Shell-and-Tube Boiler Feedwater Heat Exchanger Tube

BS 3059 Gr 360 hot-finished seamless tube can be used as the heat-transfer element in a shell-and-tube boiler feedwater heat exchanger.

In this application, water or another process fluid flows through the tube bore while the heating medium flows around the outside surface. The tube therefore performs three functions simultaneously: containing internal pressure, transferring heat through the tube wall and maintaining dimensional stability where it passes through support plates and tubesheets.

For this specific application, purchasing specifications should define outside diameter, wall thickness, tube length, tubesheet expansion requirements, pressure test requirements and any additional non-destructive examination.
