Welded Low-Carbon Steel Tubing

SAE J526 tubing is an electric-resistance welded (ERW), single-wall low-carbon steel tube supplied in coils (or straight lengths) for automotive fluid conductor applications where controlled bending, flaring, beading, forming, and brazing are required.
Important design note: SAE J526 material is not intended for single-flare applications due to a potential leak path associated with the internal weld bead/scarfed region; if a single flare is mandatory, the tube selection and risk control should be defined by agreement (or an alternative specification should be selected).
Form supply: Coiled (typical) and straight lengths are available.
Outside diameter range (reference from tolerance table): 3.18 mm up to 88.90 mm.
Wall thickness (common J526 tolerance bands shown): 0.64–2.50 mm nominal ranges with defined tolerances by thickness band.
Dimensional tolerances (examples from SAE J526):
OD tolerance ranges from ±0.05 mm (3.18 mm OD) up to ±0.23 mm (76.2–88.9 mm OD band).
Wall tolerance varies by nominal wall band (e.g., ±0.08 to ±0.20 mm depending on thickness range).
Straightness (straight lengths): 1.0 mm over 1000 mm length (unless waived); does not apply to coiled product.
Testing basis (typical for this class): commonly performed per SAE test procedures (e.g., tensile/hardness and forming-related tests).
Single-wall ERW construction with controlled external surface after welding for routing and assembly.
Designed for practical fabrication: bending, beading, forming, and brazing-focused quality.
Coil-friendly supply supports automated tube forming, cut-to-length, and high-throughput production lines.
Flaring & leak-risk control (the #1 brake-line concern)
We specify SAE J526 clearly and highlight its single-flare limitation up front to prevent wrong-spec sourcing. For brake assemblies, we recommend matching the tube + fitting + flare method to the vehicle standard (double flare / bubble flare as applicable).
Corrosion protection options for real road environments
Brake and underbody routing is exposed to salt spray, moisture, and stone impact. We can support corrosion-resistant surface strategies (e.g., zinc plus organic topcoats such as PVF/nylon/epoxy) depending on your durability target and forming requirements.
Dimensional consistency for automated forming and assembly yield
Consistent OD/wall tolerances reduce flare variability, clamp-fit issues, and rework. SAE J526 provides defined tolerance bands for OD and wall thickness, which is essential for stable high-volume processing and quality control.
