DOM Steel Tube
This product is a Drawn-Over-Mandrel (DOM) steel tube manufactured from low-carbon welded pipe, designed for demanding mechanical applications requiring high precision, uniform mechanical properties, and excellent surface finish. It is cold-drawn over a mandrel to achieve tight tolerances on outside diameter (OD), inside diameter (ID), and wall thickness, resulting in smooth, oxide-free surfaces and superior concentricity. Typical sizes range from very small ODs for precision hydraulic components up to large ODs suitable for structural shafts, with wall thicknesses optimized for strength-to-weight performance. Below is a detailed breakdown of its material characteristics, specifications, chemical and mechanical properties, main features, applicable standards, and application areas.
T5 DOM steel tubing is produced from low-carbon electric-resistance-welded (ERW) “mother tubes” that are cold-drawn over a mandrel to improve dimensional accuracy and surface quality. The base material is typically ASTM A513 Grade 1020 or 1026, selected for its balance of weldability, machinability, and strength.
Size range (stocked): 3/16″ to 14″ OD; wall thickness from 0.028″ to 0.625″
Length: Supplied in random lengths of 17′–24′, with cut-to-length service available
Manufacturing process: Electric-resistance-welded → cold-drawn over mandrel (DOM)
Grades: Primarily 1020 (OD ≤2″ / wall ≤0.156″) and 1026 (larger or heavier wall)
The chemical composition limits for five representative low-carbon DOM grades under ASTM A519 are shown below:
Grade | C (wt %) | Mn (wt %) | P (max wt %) | S (max wt %) |
---|---|---|---|---|
1018 | 0.15–0.20 | 0.60–0.90 | 0.040 | 0.050 |
1020 | 0.18–0.23 | 0.30–0.60 | 0.040 | 0.050 |
1022 | 0.18–0.23 | 0.70–1.00 | 0.040 | 0.050 |
1026 | 0.22–0.28 | 0.60–0.90 | 0.040 | 0.050 |
1030 | 0.28–0.34 | 0.60–0.90 | 0.040 | 0.050 |
Typical mechanical properties for these five grades in the drawn-over-mandrel condition are:
Grade | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) |
---|---|---|---|
1018 | 440 | 370 | 15 |
1020 | 420 | 350 | 15 |
1022 | 380 | 205 | 25 |
1026 | 490 | 415 | 15 |
1030 | 525 | 440 | 12 |
